If you’ve supervised a particularly strong student paper in the previous calendar year related to archives, consider nominating the student’s paper for the Theodore Calvin Pease Award.

Purpose and Criteria for Selection:
The Theodore Calvin Pease Award recognizes superior writing achievements by students of archival studies. Entries are judged on innovation, scholarship, pertinence, and clarity of writing. Papers examining major trends and issues in the archives profession are preferred. Created in 1987 (and modified in 2007 and 2012), this award honors Theodore Calvin Pease, the first editor of American Archivist, the journal of the Society of American Archivists.


Eligibility:
Eligible entries are written by students enrolled in archival studies classes at either the master’s or doctoral level. A faculty member or instructor associated with the archival studies program must submit the entry to verify that the student paper was written within the context of an archival studies program and completed during the preceding calendar year. A faculty member or instructor in an archival studies program may submit one entry per award cycle. There is no cap on the number of papers than can be submitted by a school or program, provided no individual faculty member submits more than one paper.
Entries should be unpublished manuscripts of 5,000-8,000 words, must include an abstract, and should conform to the stylistic guidelines described in the editorial policy of American Archivist. Submit only the title with the paper. The name of the author, the program, or the faculty member or instructor must not appear on the manuscript.

Prize:
A certificate and cash prize of $250. The winning manuscript, after going through the editorial process with the editor of American Archivist, will be published in American Archivist.


Selection Committee:
Papers will be judged in a blind review by the Pease Subcommittee of the SAA Awards Committee. The subcommittee consists of the editor of American Archivist (who also serves as chair), the vice chair of the Committee on Education, and a member of the Society of American Archivists with experience in archival research and literature appointed annually by the president-elect to serve a one-year term. The editor of American Archivist also edits the manuscript and leads the student through the editorial process in preparation for publication.

SAA Spotlight Award

Dear Colleagues,

The SAA Spotlight Award Subcommittee invites nominations for the 2020 Spotlight Award.  This award “recognizes the contributions of individuals who work for the good of the archives profession and of archival collections, and whose work would not typically receive public recognition.”  Nominees do not have to be members of SAA.  Please share this message as you think appropriate.  I hope you will consider recognizing a colleague (or yourself!) in this way.  Additional information about the criteria and process is found below.  

Purpose and Criteria for Selection: Established in 2005, the Spotlight Award recognizes the contributions of individuals who work for the good of the archives profession and of archival collections, and whose work would not typically receive public recognition. The nominee(s) should have achieved distinction in one or more of the following ways:

 *   Participating in special projects.
 *   Exhibiting tireless committee or advocacy work.
 *   Responding effectively to an unforeseen or pressing need or emergency.
 *   Contributing innovative or creative ideas to the profession.
 *   Performing extraordinary volunteerism.
 *   Quietly but effectively promoting the profession.

Eligibility:  Awarded to an individual archivist or a group of up to five archivists who have collaborated on a project. Preference is given to archivists working in smaller repositories, especially those without institutional support for professional activities.

Prize:  A certificate and complimentary registration for the individual recipient or group (of up to five individuals) to the SAA Annual Meeting occurring in the year in which the award is presented.

Call for nominations – SAA Archival Innovator Award

Know an archivist or institution who is contributing to the profession in creative or innovative ways? Think they should be recognized for their innovative work? Then nominate them for the SAA Archival Innovator Award!

Purpose and Criteria for Selection:

Created in 2011, this award recognizes an individual archivist, a group of archivists, a repository, or an organization that demonstrates significant impact on the archives profession or within their communities. Nominations will be assessed for the following criteria:

·       Creativity or innovation in approaching professional challenges.

·       Demonstrated ability to think outside of professional or institutional norms.

·       Ability to translate creativity, innovation, and new thinking into working solutions.

·       Development of an archives program or outreach activity that has an extraordinary impact on a community.

·       Commitment to the advancement of professional knowledge through traditional or emerging information-sharing media.

Eligibility:

Presented to an archivist, group of archivists, repository, or organization for work undertaken within the past three years. The work need not be completed, but it must be sufficiently advanced to demonstrate results. Unsuccessful nominations from previous years are welcome!

2020 Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship Applications Solicited

MAC is soliciting applications for the 2020 Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship for Students of Color (http://www.midwestarchives.org/motley). The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to students of color pursuing graduate education in archival administration and to encourage ethnic diversification of the MAC membership and of the archival profession as a whole. Two $750 scholarships, accompanied by one-year memberships to MAC, will be awarded. 

In order to be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be of African, American Indian, Asian or Pacific Islander, or Latinx decent; must be a student currently enrolled in or accepted in a graduate, multicourse program in archival administration; and must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their academic program. If the program is not listed in the SAA Directory of Archival Education, http://www2.archivists.org/dae, the applicant must provide proof of the multicourse standard by submitting copies of course descriptions from the institution’s current departmental catalog. The applicant must also be either a resident of the MAC region or registered in a qualified program, onsite or online, that is based in the MAC region.

Arline Custer Memorial Award

DEADLINE: July 31, 2019 

The Arline Custer Memorial Award  is presented by the MARAC Arline Custer Memorial Award Committee.This award honors the memory of Arline Custer (1909-1975), MARAC member and editor of the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections.

Eligibility
The Arline Custer Memorial Award recognizes the best books and articles written or compiled by individuals and institutions in the MARAC region – the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.Works under consideration include, but are not limited to, monographs, popular narratives, reference works and exhibition catalogs using archival sources.Individuals or institutions may submit up to two works published between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.

Evaluation
Works must be relevant to the general public as well as the archival community. They also should be original and well-researched using available sources. In addition, they should be clearly presented, well-written and organized. Visual materials, if used, should be appropriate to the text.Preference will be given to works by archivists.

Award
Up to three awards may be given, with a maximum value of $200.00 for books and $100.00 for articles. The 2019 award(s) will be announced at the Fall 2019 Conference in Cambridge, MD.

Job Description:
Binghamton University Libraries invite applications for a tenure-track position as Special Collections Librarian. The successful candidate will promote the discovery and use of Binghamton University’s collection of rare books and manuscripts as an integral part of the Libraries’ research and teaching resources and programs. The special collections librarian will work with faculty and students in a variety of disciplines across the curriculum, and provide specialized reference, access, outreach, programming, and instruction services as a part of the special collections team. Special Collections includes significant rare book, archival, manuscript, art and realia collections as well as the University Archives.

The position reports to the Head of Special Collections, with the Director of Library Systems and Special Collections as second-line supervisor. Librarians at Binghamton University are members of the tenure-track
faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary
• Provide  research assistance to patrons in the reading room and
remotely
• Collaborate with teaching faculty to promote student research and integrate Special Collections into their curricula. Serve as a key instructor and support for teaching with the rare book collections
• Develop special programming, physical and online exhibitions, and social media and web content to highlight the collections
• Support broad access to the print collections including prioritizing backlogged and under-described material, working closely with the Cataloging Department; and identifying potential digitization projects in collaboration with the Digital Initiatives Department
• Train and supervise student assistants and interns
• Engage in collection management activities
• Participate in library and university committees
• Pursue scholarly growth through participation in professional library and bibliographic organizations, research, presentations, and publication

Additional
• Arrange and describe manuscript collections
• Manage the special collections stacks and work with the Preservation Department to ensure proper housing, environmental conditions and handling of materials
• Work with the Head of Special Collections and Library Development
staff to identify funding opportunities
• Assist in maintaining statistics on circulation, collection use, and publications resulting from the use of collections
• Serve as a subject bibliographer, as needed

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
• ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library and information science
• Knowledge and understanding of the history of the book, book arts, special collections librarianship, and the rare book market
• One year of experience working in a special collections library or
archive
• Experience in the instruction of special collections and other primary
sources
• Experience working with library patrons in person and remotely
• Familiarity with standards for describing and/or cataloging printed, manuscript, and archival collections
• Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills in a team environment
• Creative public programming, social media, and exhibition curation experience
• Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
• History of successful collaboration with colleagues working in areas such as collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare book cataloging, preservation, and digitization
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience using collections management, content management, and/or integrated library systems
• Knowledge of descriptive bibliography
• Reading knowledge of Latin, Italian, and/or French
• Record of scholarly research and professional achievement
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift moderately heavy boxes and books and move items to and from shelves
• Ability to tolerate moderate levels of dust generated during normal activities and movement of objects

The Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award Subcommittee of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) seeks nominations for the 2019 award.

This Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award recognizes an archivist, editor, group of individuals, or institution that has increased public awareness of a specific body of documents (which can be a specific archival collection or thematic aggregation) through compilation, transcription, exhibition, or public presentation of archives or manuscript materials for educational, instructional, or other public purpose. Work that has impact on a local, regional, national, and/or international level is welcomed.
